Do Everything You Can for Your Facility

In light of the number of units we have completed throughout our tenure and based on the size and number of units your facility may have, we strongly suggest that you consider taking the current health of your AHUs into consideration during this time. This will not only help you reduce your risk of associated infections but give you peace of mind in terms of knowing that you and your team has taken extra steps to not only protect the occupants of the building but to giving all your clients who walk through your doors a place to feel safe.

What You Need to Keep in Mind

As we understand COVID-19 is spread through point-of-contact. The virus is contained in mucus droplets expelled typically through sneezing, coughing, or even speaking. There must be due diligence in providing a sanitary environment for the public in these trying times.

Recent studies show this virus has a longer airborne life than originally reported. That’s why it’s important to keep in mind that the lungs of any facility are the air handling units (AHUs).

We are here to help you with your due diligence in providing the public, your staff, your clients a sigh of relief knowing that you have done everything you can to help prevent the spread of the virus.

According to Center for Disease Control resources:

“The basic principle of steam sterilization, as accomplished in an autoclave, is to expose each item to direct steam contact at the required temperature and pressure for the specified time. Thus, there are four parameters of steam sterilization: steam, pressure, temperature, and time. The ideal steam for sterilization is dry saturated steam and entrained water (dryness fraction ≥97%). Pressure serves as a means to obtain the high temperatures necessary to quickly kill microorganisms. Specific temperatures must be obtained to ensure the microbicidal activity. The two common steam-sterilizing temperatures are 121°C (250°F) and 132°C (270°F). These temperatures (and other high temperatures) must be maintained for a minimal time to kill microorganisms. Recognized minimum exposure periods for sterilization of wrapped healthcare supplies are 30 minutes at 121°C (250°F) in a gravity displacement sterilizer or 4 minutes at 132°C (270°F) in a pre-vacuum sterilizer. At constant temperatures, sterilization times vary depending on the type of item (e.g., metal versus rubber, plastic, items with lumens), whether the item is wrapped or unwrapped, and the sterilizer type.”

As of March 15, 2020, the CDC is requesting everyone to postpone in-person events that consist of 50 people or more, for the next eight weeks. No doubt your school’s system will be complying with the regulations set out by the government. So this could be a great opportunity to get your AHU cleaned, as students and some staff will be out at this time. That way when many of the students and staff return, the AHU systems will be sterilized creating a more safe environment.
